He might have had a lot of speed, but most of the time it was straight into the corner where he would attempt a slap shot from a bad angle. This guy was a box of rocks. |

A “4-A player” - he did nicely at Rockford and Springfield, couldn’t put it together in The Show.
What’s disconcerting is that of those first round picks, 5 out of the top 16 didn’t get 100 games in the NHL - and 10 out of the 30 didn’t hit that level.

Forever I have referred to him [name] as an oxymoron.
Another description fits for the very poor drafting of #1 picks by Tallon but you can choose your own colorful adjective.
Wiz must of grinded his teeth often in those days |

I bet he does!
this was Tallon's first ever selection as the GM of the Blackhawks as well.
He was hired in June of 2005 and in July he took Skille. |

Thanks! Will do!
We have lots of other random Hawks to cover. And not all of them have to be busts like Barker or Skille.
I'll mix in some fan favourite randoms as well. |

This guy was the biggest letdown of a player ever for me personally. Living near Norfolk, VA (former home of the farm team), I used to go to a ton of Admirals games. I watched a bunch of guys improve their games here, many of which were members of the 2010 Cup winning team.
I kept hearing about this Skille kid, and was there the night he made his AHL debut (or at least his debut on home ice). This kid comes out blazing, right from his first shift. Fastest guy on the ice all night, finished every check. I was convinced this kid was the real deal.
So, it was back to back home games and I went to see the game the next night as well. Aaaaannnd... Poof. Whoever that kid was that was out there the night before... gone. And we all know how things went from there.
I know and knew then that you can’t judge a player based off of one game, but damn if I’ve ever seen an electrifying performance followed up by consistent mediocrity like that. |

Jack Skille in a nutshell:
Takes puck at own blue line.
Races up the right wing board.
Blows by everyone creating an unlikely odd man rush.
Rips a shot high and wide.
Puck caroms back to center ice resulting in an odd man break the other way.
Rinse, repeat. |

Great write up!
Sums Mr. (no) Skille up very nicely
I really enjoy these write-ups...Keep them coming!
No shortage of shoulda, coulda, woulda's to write about in the hawks drafting during those lean years. |

Dale was able to follow Skille with Toews & Kane as his next 2 #1 picks, so 67% HOFers is pretty solid.
Suggestion for next, the Hawk's #1 pick after 19 & 88, Kyle Beach. |

How about a bad Blackhawks version of "Would you rather"?
Would you rather have 1st round pick Jack Skille be good enough to get call ups and tease with the occasional good game, or Kyle Beach who proved immediately to be a POS, and never good or healthy enough to get called up?
I know the Hawks had both, but which one is worse? |

Kyle Beach would be a good one for the next write-up. |

Both were bad. Skille at least had a bit of a career though. |

Indeed. I actually think that the Skille situation was worse, because there were a few times that he teased with effort and skill. Kyle Beach let it be known almost immediately that he was a turd, and the Hawks knew exactly what they had so as to not waste any additional time or effort. End of the day, both #1 picks were useless, but Beach was less wasteful to the team.
In my book. That is a win!
… maybe I need a new book. |

IIRC, there was a pack of Hogs that lived together and talked smack about the Hawks organization. I believe the group was at least Morin, Pirri, and Jimmy Hayes. Possibly Beach.
With big brother Jimmy in the mix, I'm guessing he may have helped spoil the mind of Kevin (although he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer to begin with).
That was also the Ted Dent era of Hogs hockey.
So glad the system rebooted and is on a better path of prospect development under better coaching.
Derek King isn't going to win coach of the year but is better than Dent by a country mile. |

Nice the "League of Underachieving Gentlemen" talking crap about an organization that gave them a chance. Classy.

Thanks Tyler, for this write-up.
In the Skille time-frame, I was deep in the fog of dealing with family illness so I thankfully do not remember much of the 'Hawks misfortunes.
The descriptions kind of remind me of Viktor Stahlberg. Except Stahlberg was pretty bad a** on the PK. |
